Gene Sole, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC Retired

Gene Sole was a man of unquestionable character and integrity. His service to our country and community speaks for itself. Gene retired from the United States Marines, a highly decorated Lieutenant Colonel. He also had a distinguished career in the Lower Cape May School District where he served as a teacher, Vice Principal of Lower Cape May Regional High School, and finally as Principal of the Richard M. Teitelman Middle School. Gene was the Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #73. He coached Little League baseball and football in the Lower Township area and was the Assistant Soccer Coach at LCMRHS. He was a member of the Cape May City Volunteer Fire Company and Treasurer of the Cape May County Republican Party. Gene was a beacon of leadership, patriotism, and courage to the youth of Lower Cape May and the many Marines he commanded. He loved his family, friends, community, and country and always gave of himself and put others first. He truly led by example.

The Gene Sole Scholarship is a tribute to Gene and will honor those students that demonstrate Gene’s moral character and integrity through leadership and service to their community. Scholarship candidates must be pursuing an advanced education. They must demonstrate leadership, and be involved in community service and extracurricular activities, as well as maintain a GPA of at least a 2.75. They are also required to write an essay reflecting on a personal experience that has influenced their character and life.
We are proud to have awarded two $5000.00 scholarships in 2012.

Congratulations to our first recipients, Shannon Rose and Matt McGaffney!
